Chapter 9

A Losing Battle

Fear isn’t just in the mind; it’s in the soul.

It was happening. The moment I had been dreading since I had learned who I was. We were face to face with Graven, and we weren’t winning.

He had his army with him, and they were ready for war. We were tired and so weakened from having battled Lokan the day before. We had lost several guards, and some others very dear to us, but we had defeated him. I didn’t have the strength left in me to hold them off.

They knew of our war with Lokan, and they used it to their benefit. They had waited until they heard of the battle ending and ambushed us. They were ready, but we were too weak and weary. Graven was mocking me as he stepped up with his very dominant stature. He faced me as he cocked a slight grin.

He turned Jaslene, Alvin, and Ash into statues in front of my eyes with barely even a wave of his hand, daring me to try and stop him, but I couldn’t. Behind him stood a red-haired girl with a fresh, foul scent.

It was Elizabeth; he had found her. There was nothing to stop him now, except for me.

I fought back the tears from the loss of three people so soon, but the pain was almost overwhelming. Desmond flew at him, releasing the power that he’d not been able to control, but Graven didn’t flinch as a few fell to their knees.

He threw the quicksand puddle I had seen in a previous vision at Selesha and Grandpa, and I was too late reaching them to save them. It seemed as if no one would survive this massacre other than me.

I didn’t even have time to process how many we had already lost before I heard the screams of Gear and Olivia as they were pressed to death by Yastine and Graven. Kao had created a chaotic atmosphere that was disorienting everyone.

Ayla was too weak, and with the added help of Elizabeth’s amplification for the dramians, she was unable to counteract the chaos. In a blink, she was suddenly a stone.

Jay attacked them with thrusts of weakened bolts, but the enforcer stepped up. He forced Jay to throw a bolt at Iris, who was distracted while she sent whirling winds at the fleet of dramians. Her eyes were furious, but her magic was weaker from the loss of George. The bolt crashed into her, knocking her to the ground where a puddle of quicksand awaited. Another one of my family members was dead.

Then two more of Yastine’s victims fell to the ground, lifeless. It was Allaysia and Edmond. I could feel myself shaking with anger and aching with loss.

I leapt into the air and my fist crashed to the ground creating a powerful earthquake. As the earth opened up, it swallowed five of the dramians.

I sent a powerful blaze into the crevice, destroying them. My magic poured out of me, lashing out at anyone in its path.
